Adopting a Pet

Adopt PupOur application process has many steps that need to be explained. In order to match the rescue dogs’ needs with the best adoptive homes and environments, it is necessary for both the applicants and the rescue organization to complete the entire application process. Each step of the process will lead to the next if the applicant is being considered. Please take a moment to read the application process before proceeding. (READ MORE)

Become A Foster Parent

Foster Mom AngelaWe do not operate a shelter or have any formal facility. All our rescue pups are in private approved foster homes throughout the United States. We don’t ask you to take them to a pet store on Saturdays until they’re adopted. We only ask that you be their transition home, between where they came from & where they’ll be adopted to. We ask that you treat them as a family member while they’re in your care. Spoil them rotten and give them love. That’s not hard to do!  (READ MORE)

Making A Donation

DonateWithout your donations, we can not rescue the dogs who need us the most. Even with generous veterinary discounts, the cost of caring for our dogs until they are adopted is usually much more than the adoption donation.  There are dogs in puppy mills and kill shelters, waiting for us- and we can’t help without the $$ to pay for their care. There are seniors, waiting for us to take them into our program, and there are the special needs pup already with us, who need ongoing care. Please donate! (READ MORE)

Become A Volunteer

STFBR always needs and WELCOMES volunteers. Many of our wonderful Volunteers assist in transport, home inspection of possible new adopters, fund raising and so much more . Remember that any time you travel, from town to town, or state to state, if you can offer a furbaby a ride, you just might be saving a life, or bring a pup to his or her new family. Ask how you can help today! (READ MORE)

Our Work

Dedicated To Rescue

Photo of Shih TzuShih Tzus & Furbabies is dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, and rehoming of small purebred and mixed breed dogs. We rescue all small breeds, including shih tzus, lhasa apso, poodles, pomeranians, yorkies, chihuahuas, pekingese, japanese chins, cavalier king charles spaniels, maltese, dachshund, bichon, chinese crested, italian greyhounds, schnauzers, and terriers. We rescue pure, as well as mixed breed dogs of all ages.

We believe that, somewhere, there is a home for every dog, but that we have a responsibility to place our dogs into homes that will best meet their needs, both physically and emotionally. We look for people with patient and loving hearts, and an understanding of the furbaby mind.

We are also committed to educating the public about the importance of ethical, responsible, and humane pet guardianship.

How We Started

In the spring of 1997, we rescued our first “Furbaby” in Jacksonville, Florida. We were introduced to Annie, a blind, 8 year old Shih Tzu girl. Deemed “unadoptable,” she was to be euthanized!! We were new, and knew very little about organized rescue, but we did know that we had to save this little one. We were given two weeks to find her a home and we did!! Her new mom had just lost a blind dog and knew that little Annie deserved the same opportunity to be safe and loved – and to live – as any sighted dog. We were hooked!

We established ourselves with shelters and veterinarians in Florida and Georgia, found a few wonderful families willing to care for (foster) the pups until they were ready for adoption, and became known as one of the few small dog rescue organizations willing to take the seniors, the special needs, the abused to the point of aggression, and the babies needing extreme medical care. Our volunteers worked closely with several shelters in the southeast. Our original plan was to rescue Shih Tzu and Tzu mixes, but when we walked through kill shelters on euthanasia day, we couldn’t leave dogs behind because they weren’t “our” breed. And so “Shih Tzu and Furbaby Rescue” was born.

Our Rescue Work

Our MissionWe accept dogs in need from shelters, commercial breeders, other rescuers and individuals giving up their pets for a variety of reasons.

Our furbabies are examined and treated by our veterinarians, vaccinated, and spayed or neutered before placement. They are also thoroughly temperament assessed and rehabiliated in loving volunteer foster homes.

We are located in Georgia but rescue and rehome throughout the United States.

Have you ever wondered where the unsold pet shop puppies go when they are no longer “cute” babies? Or what happens to their parents, the breeding dogs living in commercial breeding facilities, when they stop producing? How about the adult dog who is never properly housetrained, or left home alone for long hours, and then held responsible when he has an accident on the new carpet? Often wonderful adult furbabies have been replaced by new puppies. One wonderful terrier girl came to rescue because she barked at the fish tank! We have taken in dogs who have been abused by children and then discarded when they try to defend themselves. And, there are the little ones whose humans can not afford to provide necessary, often lifesaving medical care.

Abuse, neglect, irresponsible breeding, puppy mills, financial difficulties, changes in family circumstances, births, and illness and death of guardians are all contributors to the large population of homeless dogs and some of the reasons we find so many furbabies in shelters and rescue groups. Look at all those little faces on our web site and then ask yourself, why should I adopt a rescued dog?

Finding Pets A New Home

There is a full process that our furbabies go through before being available for adoption to their new homes.  Once coming into our STFBR, our Volunteers bring them to our network of veterinarians for medical assessment, immediate care, as well as creating a regiment for that furbaby to thrive in our care.

Then furbabies go to our Volunteer  Foster homes, where they not only get the medical care assigned from their vet, but get the love and support of our Volunteer Fosters to help them become the best they can be so that they can become, if not already, adoptable to their new homes. What sets us apart from many rescues is that we adopt the furbaby to the home that fits THEM and not whoever wants the furbaby first. This is because we know if a furbaby would be right in a particular home.  Our rescue is run by volunteers only, who have full lives of their own, aside from being dedicated to STFBR. Whether it be administrative work, fostering and giving a furbaby another chance at a happy life, or assisting in transport, if you are looking for the most rewarding feeling, please consider joining our group of wonderful volunteers because there are always furbabies in need.
